Every now and again films become subject of the rumour mill, then there are those that sit there for over 20 years, Beetlejuice 2 is part of the latter category. From being set in Hawaii to never being likely to happen ever, the sequel to Tim Burton’s beloved 1988 Horror Comedy has gone through the motions. Here at Starburst we have been riding the news Sandworm regarding the sequel for a while now and things are getting tastier than ever. So tasty in fact that we may indeed have the ideal situation on our hands of Tim Burton returning to direct, with Michael Keaton back as bio-exorcist Betelgeuse and a script from Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg.

The original film has spawned an animated series, amassed a huge cult following and come to add a whole new meaning to Harry Belafonte’s “The Banana Boat Song” and “Jump in the Line”.  According to Schmoesknow.com, who have it from a very reliable source, the bushy haired master of macabre is eager to return to the afterlife. So eager in fact he was going to drop out of filming Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children to helm the film, until arrangements were made that meant he could do both. Beetlejuice 2 has always been near and dear to Keaton, who has said on numerous occasions that he would love to return if Burton was directing. Grahame-Smith also noted his firm interest in doing justice to the original stating “I don’t think we should do it if we shit on the legacy”.

Time will tell and at this point we are still at a “trustworthy sources say” stage but all things point to a direct sequel, not a reboot/remake, so that is a huge plus point. This film has kept rolling out over the years and plans (unlike Betelgeuse himself) are looking alive and well. We are after all talking about the land of the afterlife so age will barely pose much of an issue. Details are hazy on any other cast members (Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis) being involved but should reports be valid and Burton is on board it could be a real Day-O moment in moving things forward. If plans don’t work though, they could always say his name 3 times and see what happens?
