All work and no play makes Glen Mazzara a dull boy…

Fresh from his stellar job of injecting life into the glacial paced zombie show, and getting shit-canned by his AMC bosses as thanks, the former WALKING DEAD showrunner Mazzara has landed a major gig at Warner Bros, and is now in charge of penning THE OVERLOOK HOTEL, a prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s THE SHINING.

This isn’t to be confused with Stephen King’s own SHINING follow-up, sequel DOCTOR SLEEP, which will hit bookshelves this September. In fact if we recall right, Warner Bros’ announcement that they were moving forward with their project came right around the time of King’s unveiling of his book early last year… There’s something a bit suspicious about not reaching out to the author and just going ahead with your own spin on his IP, or is DOCTOR SLEEP already set up at a rival studio and Warner Bros are trying to get the audience up front before SHINING confusion sets in? Famously, King was not a fan of Kubrick’s (and Warner Bros’) 1980 adaptation of his book, and is rightly ticked off that this project even exists. We on the other hand are torn. There’s lots to explore in The Overlook’s history, giving the story plenty of scope (it’s a real shame this isn’t a TV show though), and Mazzara has won us over with his work on TWD, but Kubrick’s movie is a bona fide classic, its ambiguity one of its key strengths. Will an origin story sully future viewings? It’s already hard enough to watch now we’ve all seen ROOM 237!

We’ll keep you up to date as THE OVERLOOK HOTEL progresses…
