Movie News: From MAMA to MUMMY, Andres Muschietti to Head Up Universal Reboot

Following in the footsteps of Ang Lee helming HULK (“You wouldn’t like me when I’m Ang Lee”) and Marc ‘Webb’ directing THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, comes the latest ironic Hollywood hiring: MAMA director Andres Muschietti has been named as Len Wiseman’s replacement on Universal’s upcoming reboot of their MUMMY franchise. Details on the project are still scant, other than it was initially conceived by Jon (PROMETHEUS) Spaihts before Alex Kurtzman & Robert Orci (STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS) came aboard screenplay, and that it's is a modern day, “gritty” horror tale with action elements, that examines what would happen if we came across one of the bandaged bastards in today’s world. Unusually, The Mummy itself is reported to be the central protagonist. Interesting. Despite a few flaws, we were great admirers of Muschietti’s MAMA, and coupled with the fact this new MUMMY has got bugger all to do with Brendan Fraser or his dodgy-CGI adversaries, this could be one to start getting excited about.

Expect THE MUMMY to shamble into cinemas sometime in 2016.
