Production on a new instalment of interminable horror saga Ju-on (or The Grudge, if you prefer) is underway, marking the approximately 587th entry in the hydra-headed franchise.

The official synopsis read thusly:

An elementary school teacher named Yui visits the home of a boy named Toshio Saeki, who has been absent from school for a long period of time. When she arrives, she relives the horrific tragedy which occurred in the Saeki household 10 years earlier. A cardboard box left in a closet holds the key to revealing a long-hidden truth.

Originating as a 70-minute DTV film written and directed by Takashi Shimizu, the series swiftly gained momentum with what the makers of Paranormal Activity only figured out seven years later, that a single concept can be consistently rehashed to maintain an entire saga. This latest entry will be subtitled Owari no Hajimari (The Beginning of the End – insert snarky comment as appropriate) and as Shimizu himself is currently occupied finishing off a live-action version of Kiki’s Delivery Service, directorial duties have fallen to Ochiai Masayuki, who previously gave us the likes of garish thriller Hypnosis, B-class J-horror Infection and the US remake of Thai ghost story Shutter.
