THE EQUALIZER was undoubtedly a cult show, but is it something that Starburst would normally cover? Probably not, no – you can blame the slow news day. That said, we trust there’s enough of you interested in the fondly remembered ‘80s vigilante show (with the greatest theme tune ever – discuss) to warrant a short trip outside our normal sandbox…

Director Rupert Wyatt (making his second appearance in our news today) is close to signing on to helm the big-screen reboot, which Sony has been knocking about for a while now. Denzel Washington is still locked in to take over the role the late, great Edward Woodward made famous, with the star and studio (obviously) hoping for franchise potential. Nicholas Winding Refn was briefly circling the project some months ago, but Washington has since claimed those talks were short-lived. Shame.

We’re still gutted that Wyatt had to leave DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, the sequel his 2011 reboot RISE OF (etc, etc), but at least with him on board this has a shot at being something a little bit more special than your average lazy reimagining.

We’ll keep you updated on the progress of THE EQUALIZER… but only if we get desperate again.
