With found-footage horror movies all the range over the last few years, many people often forget that THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is the movie that so many of these low-budget efforts are trying to emulate. After the 1999 smash hit was followed by 2000’s poorly-received BOOK OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH 2, all thoughts of any further films in the series seemed as dead as the trio that partook in the doomed search in that initial movie. Now, speaking to Movies.com, one of the first film’s directors has been talking about a possible third BLAIR WITCH movie.

Discussing the chances of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT 3 happening, Eduardo Sanchez, who directed THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT with Daniel Myrick, said, “Lionsgate owns the property, so it’s obviously up to them right now. We’ve been talking to them for the past four or five years about doing it, but there’s nothing really in the works right now with us. But I think maybe just being back at Lionsgate will help move things forward on another BLAIR WITCH movie.”

On the approach to this film, Sanchez added, “We never imagined doing another BLAIR WITCH found-footage movie. Our plan for the sequel is definitely not doing a found-footage movie.”

As for the plot of any new BLAIR WITCH film, the director has previously stated that it would “start at the beginning and do the story of Elly Kedward, the original. The Blair Witch is named after her.”

Sanchez is now back with Lionsgate for his latest movie, EXISTS. As for THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT 3, it’s by no means a definite, but it certainly seems that if it was ever going to happen then there’s no better time than now.
