Recent reports have focussed a lot on the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is now out of contract with Disney/Marvel. The actor has hinted that he may be prepared to walk away from Tony Stark, with many believing this to be a leverage move on Downey Jr.’s part when it comes to contract negotiations. Marvel have taken the sting out of this by suggesting that they’d be prepared to move forward with Tony Stark with or without Robert Downey Jr.’s involvement. Well, The Hollywood Reporter is now reporting that the two parties have begun negotiations.

Whilst a return to the Tony Stark role is the main topic of discussion, it appears that Stark’s appearances will be in THE AVENGERS 2 and THE AVENGERS 3, with no mention of IRON MAN 4. Even though negotiations are on-going, it’s unclear whether Downey Jr. sees any reward in a fourth solo outing for Ol’ Shellhead.

Expect to be hearing a lot more on this proverbial game of chess as it develops over the next few months.
