Following a boffo Box office bonanza (thanks, Variety) in its first weekend Zack Snyder’s messy Superman reboot Man of Steel has faltered somewhat in its second weekend on US cinema screens with an estimated 65% drop in its takings, raking in “just” $41 million bringing its total US haul to date to a still-impressive $210m (nearly $400m worldwide) against a budget of $215m. The guy in the red cape was thrown into third place in the US movie charts this week by two brazen newcomers. Pixar’s long-awaited Monsters Inc prequel Monsters University netted a decent $82m and the much-maligned (but actually not bad) Brad Pitt bloodless zombie flick World War Z pulled in a decent $66m against a budget of over $200m. Paramount will be breathing a sigh of relief as World War Z has been expected to flop catastrophically since news of its troubled production and reshoots became common knowledge. A good  overseas performance (its combined US/overseas tally currently stands at $112m) suggests that WWZ might not be one of the year’s big-hitters but it should turn a decent enough profit – especially when eventual DVD/Blu Ray sales are taken into account further down the line – to the extent that Paramount are already making noises about developing a sequel. Who’d have thought it?
