We should all be getting used to this now, but no, it still elicits groans en masse here at Starburst HQ every time a new remake is announced.

So what’s the lucky property to be recycled today? Yep, it’s Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 bug-blaster/political satire STARSHIP TROOPERS.

According to Vulture, uber producer Neal Moritz (I AM LEGEND) has tasked writers Ashley Edward Miller & Zack Stentz (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS) to pen the script, rebooting the franchise which has so far spawned a series of direct-to-dvd spin-offs, videogame tie-ins and a TV series.

How this will affect Sony’s forthcoming anime sequel we recently reported on (read about it here) is anyone’s guess.

What with TOTAL RECALL already completed and ROBOCOP on the way, it looks like Verhoeven’s back catalogue is the new go to well for Hollywood now John Carpenter’s has run dry. SHOWGIRLS next anyone?

We’ll have more on this as it develops…
