What is your favourite movie theme?

Might it be the heroic SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, the adventurous Raiders March, the wistful Introduction from EDWARD SCISSORHANDS?

The nation’s favourite movie theme is officially the Star Wars Main Theme by John Williams. As part of BBC Radio 3’s ‘Sound of Cinema’ season listeners were invited to vote for their favourite film theme and Williams’ theme for STAR WARS received almost a quarter of all the votes received.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY took second place, with WEST SIDE STORY in third.

Other movie themes appearing in the top ten include Bernard Herrmann’s VERTIGO, Hans Zimmer’s THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, GREASE, THE SOUND OF MUSIC and APOCALYPSE NOW.

The BBC Concert Orchestra will play the top 20 themes live on BBC Radio 3 from 2pm today (Friday, 27th September).

John Williams is also to be featured as ‘Composer of the Week’ on BBC Radio 3, reflecting on his career in a series of interview segments airing at 12 midday and 6.30pm from next Monday (30th September) to Friday (4th October).

If you’re an a aficionado of film music, particularly Danny Elfman, then you can catch the BBC Concert Orchestra performing Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton at the NIA, Birmingham, Thursday 10th October. Danny Elfman himself will be singing a song or two.
