Not content with portraying a classic villain from the Star Trek universe, the latest rumour doing the rounds is that Benedict Cumberbatch will be cast in the upcoming Star Wars movie by J.J. Abrams.

According to Film Chronicles , his involvement is set to be a “big casting announcement” from Lucasfilm. Obviously, this is still a rumour so don’t get too excited/angry/frustrated just yet. But as he was recently reported to have backed out of Guillermo Del Toro’s CRIMSON PEAK, could this serve as a fitting explanation to his departure?

The next obvious question is who could he play? Many would happily cast him as an evil Sith Lord but that seems too expected after his role as Khan in STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS. Perhaps we might see a new side to Benedict’s acting chops in the role of a Jedi Knight? I can certainly imagine him rabbling off lines in a similar vein to his portrayal of Sherlock and it would perhaps help with inevitable criticisms that Abrams is regurgitating STAR TREK success.

For now we’ll just have to wait and see what Lucasfilm and Abrams has in store. After all, he might just be voicing an Ewok or something.
