We doubt that it’ll be the last bit of EPISODE VII news to come out of this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration Europe, but it’s probably one of the most welcome: John Williams is confirmed to return to score the next three instalments.

Although it had been rumoured for a while, Williams’ involvement was confirmed this morning by Executive Producer Kathleen Kennedy during an onstage Q&A.

For most of us, STAR WARS without John Williams is unthinkable, so this is very welcome news indeed. His work on the movies is some of the most famous (and best) in film history. Even in the much maligned prequels, Williams delivered classics – his DUEL OF THE FATES was probably the highlight of THE PHANTOM MENACE (yes, we know there wasn’t a lot of competition, but still!)

Kennedy wasn’t giving too much else away about the new movie, other than they’d be utilising as many real world locations as possible: an indication perhaps that the new trilogy won’t be quite as CGI intensive as the last three? (God we hope so!)

There’s bound to be a few more titbits about the new trilogy coming out over the course of the weekend. For a start, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are attending, so it’s possible, fingers crossed, that we may finally get the long awaited confirmation on the appearance of the Skywalker twins in the new movie. But news of Williams involvement is a very good start to the weekend.

STAR WARS EPISODE VII is scheduled for a 2015 release.
