It’s that time of the year again when the entertainment industry rolls out their most expensive 30 second nuggets of upcoming films for the huge Superbowl crowd, and thankfully all those lovely ads go online straight after.

The new trailer that was shown for STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS shows a few new scenes and answers one question posed by the previous trailers while leaving others maddeningly unresolved.

First up it’s looking pretty clear that the Enterprise definitely is the constitution class starship taking a dip in previous trailers as the new teaser shows a damaged Enterprise falling from orbit, the infamous NCC-1701 registry number clearly visible.

On the other hand the following exchange between Benedict Cumberbatch’s ”John Harrison” character and Kirk (Chris Pine) leaves us no clearer on figuring who Cumberbatch’s character is, and how he relates to the original series:

Harrison: “I’m better”

Kirk: “At what?”

Harrison: “Everything.”

Cumberbatch’s dialogue clearly can be seen to fuel both the speculation that Harrison is a rebooted, genetically superior Khan or new take on Gary Mitchell, the federation crew member who developers god like powers in the original series’ broadcast pilot episode Where No Man Has Gone Before.

One thing is for sure; thanks to JJ Abrams obsession with “mystery boxes” we probably won’t find out the truth until the film is actually released. In the meantime, you can enjoy the teaser below…

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS opens in cinemas on May 17th 2013.
