Recent speculation has linked both Roberto Orci and Joe Cornish to the STAR TREK 3 directing gig. Now comes word from Deadline that Orci is indeed in advanced negotiations with Skydance Productions and Paramount to helm the third of this relaunched STAR TREK series. Whilst not quite officially confirmed at this stage, it’s said that Orci is the clear frontrunner for the job.

Orci has previous with STAR TREK, having written both of J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK films, not to mention the tie-in video game. It’s said that, should Orci officially get the gig, he’ll be joined by screenwriters Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne in penning the script for STAR TREK 3.

At this stage there’s no confirmed release date for STAR TREK 3, although it’s believed that the movie is targeting a 2016 release, which would see it arrive at the same time as the franchise’s 50th anniversary. If that is to be the case, you’d have to presume that something official will be announced over the next few months.
