With J.J. Abrams set to direct STAR WARS EPISODE VII in dear old Blighty (cue those violins), a new director is needed to helm the next STAR TREK movie. With the rumour that it could have been Jon M. Chu (G.I. JOE: RETALIATION) well and truly quashed, a new name has been mentioned. I think this choice of director will please many of you and it puts to rest any concerns that I may have had, and that name is Rupert Wyatt (RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES).

Cinematallica has been told that Wyatt is “virtually a lock at this stage in the game” to sign on to the project. Now this is hardly an official announcement but surely Wyatt is a better choice than Jon M. Chu.

Although Wyatt is also attached to BIRDSONG, NIGHT FILM, and AGENT 13, STAR TREK is the type of high profile project that could take precedence.

In other STAR TREK news, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will once again be penning the sequel, but this time without Damon Lindelof. And although Abrams is set to direct the next STAR WARS movie he is still in negotiations to produce. However, we wouldn’t expect the new STAR TREK movie until 2016 despite what Zachary Quinto says. Logic dictates that Paramount will want to hold it back until then as it will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 1966 premiere of the STAR TREK TV series.
