Last week we finally got confirmation that J.J. Abram’s long-awaited sequel to his excellent STAR TREK reboot would officially start lensing on January 15th 2012, but at the time there was only a vague ‘some time in 2013’ release date for us to go on.

That’s all changed now, with Paramount today announcing the day we must all go circle on our calendars – May 17th 2013.

Not only that, but it’s also been revealed that it will be released in 3D. If that’s your kind of thing.

And in news that will surprise nobody (since he’s worked on pretty much Abrams project yet) the wonderful Michael Giacchino will once again be on scoring duty.

The as yet to be titled sequel will reunite the creative team of the first – Abrams directing, Lindelof, Orci & Kurtzman writing – and will see all the actors returning to the Enterprise too. Benicio Del Toro is still in talks to play the movie’s mystery villain.
