Cast your mind back a couple of weeks ago. If you’re a regular visitor to this fine site you may recall a news item that had producer Joel Silver proclaim that Terry Gilliam’s Watchmen would have been a “much better movie”. According to Silver, Gilliam had planned to end the film with Dr Manhattan erasing himself from existence, reducing the rest of the cast to characters in a comic book. He also stated that Zack Snyder’s version was “a slave to the material”.

Snyder was, understandably, somewhat annoyed and counter commented by saying that he made Watchmen “to save it from the Terry Gilliam’s of the world”.

I surmised that we’d ever know what Mr Gilliam thought as he probably had more important things on his mind other than a film he had never made.

Well wouldn’t you know it as Terry Gilliam has indeed commented. During his Reddit AMA Gilliam was complimentary about Snyder’s adaptation and said that the film “worked well”.

Gilliam also briefly explained about the problems he encountered trying to adapt Alan Moore’s and Dave Gibbons’ epic for the big screen.

“Charles McKeown and I wrote the script. I always felt it was not the best way to treat it because trying to squeeze it into 2.5 hours is an unlikely thing. I think we wrote an interesting version of it, but I think it needed more time to really work. I thought Zack’s film worked well, but it suffered from the very problem that I was happy to avoid by not making the film.”

So there you have it. Now how about we just put this whole thing behind us and we need never mention it again.

Gilliam’s latest film The Zero Theorem arrives this month. He is scheduled to begin shooting The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in September
