Again I find myself writing about a horror remake…

Deadline has the scoop, which is that 1983′s SLEEPAWAY CAMP is the latest in a long line of horror films set to get the remake treatment. Without going into too much detail, SLEEPAWAY CAMP is best described as a typical ’80s slasher that just so happened to be set at a camp retreat. What made the film stand out from its competition is the rather huge twist, which I won’t spoil right now. If you’ve seen the film you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. If not, and you’re intrigued, Google the film and prepare to see some rather shocking images. Either way, it’s safe to say, the twist is what made this film stand out from the crowd.

In terms of the remake, Jeff Katz has apparently purchased the rights to the franchise and is looking to relaunch the series. The original film was written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, who also returned to direct a 2003 sequel to his 1983 original. In between those two, though, we were given several other ridiculously bad sequels. Hiltzik’s 2003 effort completely ignored the events of any of these previous sequels.

In related news, Shout Factory yesterday announced that the original SLEEPAWAY CAMP will be getting a Blu-ray release towards the middle of 2014.
