Tim Burton’s 2010 reimagining of ALICE IN WONDERLAND did a lot of things. It managed to universally discredit 3D as a cinematic form, used as it was to bulk up an average-to-poor film. But it also managed to make over $1 billion at the international box office. So who really cares?

Certainly not Disney, whose decision to go on and make THE LOOKING GLASS is as surprising as the sun rising in the morning. Or Johnny Depp playing an endearing weirdo.

Details are scant on the ground right now – outside of a confirmed release date (May 27th, 2016) and the confirmed return of both Depp and Mia Wasikowska – but, to get the rumour mill a-turning, Variety reports how Sacha Baron Cohen is in early talks to join the cast in a villain’s role. Because he’s British and some stereotypes will never change.

Quite which character Cohen is in talks for remains a mystery, though if he does join it’ll mark a re-teaming of the one-time Ali-G and Johnny Depp, last seen together murdering the greater part of London in SWEENEY TODD.

The main question here is: how do you think THE LOOKING GLASS is going to work? And who might Cohen play? The first film took serious liberties with the source material (y’know, aging Alice and whatever) so here’s expecting more of the same.
