Finally production has started on Guillermo Del Toro’s long delayed return to directing with PACIFIC RIM. Shooting began on Monday with his long-time collaborator Ron Perlman a late addition to the cast.

Del Toro spoke with Wired recently and revealed that he is going for a realistic feel with PACIFIC RIM “Its really, it’s a very very beautiful poem to giant monsters, giant monsters versus giant robots. Twenty five story high robots beating the crap out of twenty five story high monsters”. So as I said ‘realistic’, but the great man goes on to say “We’re trying to create a world in which the characters are real and how it would affect our world politically, how it would affect the landscape if creatures like this really came out of the sea etc”. Personally I heard ‘Giant Monsters plus Del Toro’ and decided my bum will be in a seat opening day.

We will have to wait until May 10th 2013 to see this thing but in the meantime there should be a steady trickle of pics coming our way soon. The film also stars Charlie Hunman (SONS OF ANARCHY), Charlie Day (IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA) and Idris Elba (THOR).

Gigantic monsters seem poised to make a comeback between this and Gareth Edwards’ GODZILLA reboot. Maybe we will finally get some movement on that Peter Jackson produced NEON GENESIS EVANGELION movie rumoured a few years back eh?
