How do you follow up a film which featured a paper holder erection theory and the assertion that The Shining had a holocaust and moon landing subtext? Well, director Rodney Asher is having a bloody good go. Whereas his last film, the acclaimed Room 237, looked at a variety of crazed reading/theories of Stanley Kubrick’s landmark Horror The Shining, his next is looking at a far more real fear. 

The film is to be called The Nightmare (likely a reference to Henry Fuseli’s 1781 painting of a demonic visitation during sleep paralysis – above) and /Film presents the synopsis as:

“A disturbing investigation into the demonic visions experienced by victims of sleep paralysis and provoked by Ascher’s own unsettling experiences with the condition.”

Ascher, after his last project, is a name to look out for and The Nightmare sounds like an utterly fantastic concept. This area of life is one of the most genuinely horrifying to explore and to see a film covering it could really drive a pitchfork into your mind. We eagerly await the results of this tasty project and it could give a whole new meaning to the very real occurrence that in some ways has influenced certain films in the horror genre. This could boost the sales of coffee and ProPlus the world over! 

The Nightmare is yet to receive firm release details but stay awake with Starburst for further details on this future documentary release.
