Say what you want about Jose Padilha’s ROBOCOP reboot – it’s needless, it can no way live up to the original, everyone behind it should burn in hell for remaking a classic, etc, etc – one thing we can’t deny by now is the fact that they’re going out of their way to populate the cast with some very interesting actors indeed. The latest in talks to join the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Jackie Earle Hayley is Jay Baruchel, a face you’ll recognize from such comedic fare as TROPIC THUNDER, and a distinctly nasal voice you’ll be familiar with from his lead in HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON. He’s also in the gruellingly pretentious COSMOPOLIS, but let’s not mention that.

Barachel is reportedly in talks to play OmniCorp’s head marketing dude, another new character to the re-imagined universe.

So, to all the naysayers (and I confess being one initially!), let’s get a grip and look at it this way – ROBOCOP 3 is awful (despite the presence of ninjas), PRIME DIRECTIVES was horribly cheap, the animated series was not only balls, but also completely inappropriate, so the damage to the 1987 original is already long done! How could a remake possibly hurt the property any more? I say we should all learn to embrace what’s shaping up to be a very interesting project indeed.

Here’s the official synopsis if you didn’t catch it earlier…

‘In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front.

Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life.

He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Director José Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak.

RoboCop is being produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, with Eric Carraro as Executive Producer. The film is in pre-production and slated for a summer 2013 release.’
