Over the weekend we reported that Roberto Orci was the frontrunner to direct STAR TREK 3, and now comes confirmation that Orci will indeed helm the sequel to STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS. Variety reports that Orci will be joined by screenwriters Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne.

Orci, of course, has previous when it comes to STAR TREK, having penned the script for J.J. Abrams’ two STAR TREK movies. Now he’ll step into the director’s chair, beating out Joe Cornish to the gig.

At this stage there’s no confirmed release date for STAR TREK 3, although it’s believed that the movie is targeting a 2016 release, which would see it arrive at the same time as the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
