A couple of months back it was announced that after PROMETHEUS, Ridley Scott would return to the universe of his 1982 film BLADE RUNNER. The film is rightly regarded as a classic and this got people talking. Should it be left alone? What form would the film take? It was not clear if Scott would be directing or if he would be producing with the reigns handed to some protégé.

Ridley Scott has now given us an official update via The Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy blog that he would indeed be directing the film as well as giving us a few tidbits about what form the film would take.

“I think I’m close to finding a writer that might be able to help me deliver… we’re quite a long way in actually”. Oooo, shivers. Scott also confirms that this film will not have Rick Deckard in it as played by Harrison Ford or anyone from the 1982 film and would officially be a sequel to the first film. Alcon Entertainment are the production house on this film, which is said to be based on a ‘wholly original’ idea from Sir Ridley.

It’s something that is sure to fuel further debate amongst film fans. BLADE RUNNER is a one off, a true original that accidentally became one of the most celebrated science fiction films of all time. It still holds up surprisingly well and will doubtless continue to be discovered by new generations of film fans for years to come. I would be VERY sceptical about a sequel were it not for the fact that Ridley Scott is involved. What do you think?
