With PROMETHEUS details so thin on the ground, any info Ridley Scott and co. choose to throw our way, no matter how small or inconsequential, is descended on by just about every movie site on the internet, desperate to learn more. And we’re no exception.

Ridley’s been rapping with the guys who broke the BLADE RUNNER 2 confirmation just a few days ago (since when did The Wall Street Journal become a source for breaking sci-fi news?), and has teased the plot by explaining the film’s title does indeed refer directly to ‘The Prometheus Myth’ – the tale of a Greek God who defies his fellow Titans by stealing fire and giving it to the mortals. His petulance is thusly punished by being tied to a rock and having a giant eagle eat his liver for all eternity. Nice.

While we can happily surmise there’ll be precious little death-by-buzzard in Scott’s opus, we can see how this myth could act as a metaphor in the movie. We already know the crew pilot a ship by the name of Prometheus, so that directly refers to it’s God-like nature in terms of its abilities (deep space exploration n’ such), but what could be the substitution for fire? And what pray tell would be the punishment as a result of tampering with ‘the fire’?

Couple that quandary with Scott’s previous statement that fans of ALIEN will recognise the last eight minutes of the film as sharing “a pretty good DNA” with that universe, and all we can think is:

Fire = Space Jockey technology? Punishment = Birth of the Xenomorphs?

We’re as mystified as everybody else, but all will be revealed come June 2012.
