On this very website we reported that producer Roy Lee is behind an upcoming reboot of the long dormant POLTERGEIST franchise. The same people who broke that story over at Bloody Disgusting are also reporting that Lee will be behind reboots of THE RING and THE GRUDGE which, to confuse you further, were actually remakes of Japanese films in the first place.

Lee says: “We are looking to do a new version of THE GRUDGE but we haven’t decided what it will be. We’ve just put it out to the film community that we are hearing takes from writers on what they could bring to the table and what their thoughts are about a new version of THE GRUDGE”. Lee then goes on to speak about THE RING reboot “It’s the same thing as THE GRUDGE. They are hearing takes and actually having a script written just to see if it works to restart the franchise. In this situation we are hearing different pitches and once we hear an idea we really like we will probably execute it”.

So there you are. The original and first Hollywood stabs at both properties are pretty effective and scary little films. They were sadly ruined and killed stone dead by lacklustre sequels. Last we heard Guillermo Del Toro was a producer on a proposed RING 3D but that seems to be dead for now with them looking to start afresh. Both films have well thought out rules and mythologies which would be great for a hip horror director like Lucky McKee or Joe Lynch to come in and play with. We will have to wait and see where they go with this. After INSIDIOUS and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY are creepy long haired dead girls even scary anymore?
