The most recent entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, 2011’s On Stranger Tides, made us here at Starburst Magazine want to tear our brains out of our skulls and find some way to rip out the memory of having ever seen it. We didn’t much care for it. But the movie raked in a cool $1 billion at the Box Office worldwide so the prospect of a fifth movie, again starring Johnny Depp as the increasingly-unlikely renegade Captain Jack Sparrow, whilst inevitable, wasn’t exactly something we could say, hand on heart, we were looking forward to. Our (low) hopes may be raised though, with the news that the series may have a new scriptwriter swabbing the decks and that Terry Rossio (who wrote the lamentable last effort solo, having co-written the previous trilogy with Ted Elliott) has walked the plank. The new movie – as yet untitled and with no tentative release date announced – will be written by Jeff Nathanson whose previous credits include providing the scripts for Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can and The Terminal as well as story-development work on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. His CV also includes the scripts for Speed 2: Cruise Control and Tower Heist so the jury’s very probably likely to be out for some time on whether his involvement means we can look forward to Captain Jack setting sail again or whether we’d rather see him sinking to the depths of Davy Jones’ locker once and for all…

Disney have now announced the official release date for the film – mark July 10th 2015 in your calendars, folks!
