Paul Giamatti’s Aleksei Sytsevich, aka the Rhino, is one of several villains set to appear in Marc Webb’s upcoming THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. As well as Rhino, there’s definitely Electro and the Green Goblin for ol’ Webhead to deal with, with rumours also suggesting that The Gentleman and Black Cat may play a part in the film. Whereas Electro is the main course, Rhino is a mere side-dish for Spidey to whet his appetite with – the character is apparently set to feature a lot more in further films. Either way, Giamatti has been ‘giving the horn’ (shocking pun, we know) in a recent interview with The Toronto Sun.

Talking about how the movie version of the character will differ to the classic Rhino, Giamatti said, “In the comic books of old, he had this suit on that made him look like a rhinoceros, and it made him super strong. If there was a bank vault he would just run right through it. Butt through it with his head. And he was not very smart. And I have a particular kind of suit, but I don’t think I’m supposed to talk about it. He’s a Russian mobster. Russians are always good villains. I have an ability to just destroy things. My accent is pretty hammy. I love doing it. It seemed to me like an opportunity to be as over-the-top hammy as possible. It was really fun.”

Now we love Giamatti as much as the next guy, and the chance to see him hamming it up is always gold, but a Russian accent? Any time the Rhino comes to mind, the hard-headed villain usually has a broad New York/New Jersey type accent.

As well as Giamatti as the Rhino, the Spidey-sequel sees Andrew Garfield return as Pater Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May and Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben. Joining them are Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn, and Jamie Foxx as Electro. There’s also unknown roles for Sarah Gadon and Felicity Jones, with Jones confirmed to be playing a villain with ties to the Green Goblin.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is released on 18th April, 2014.
