Action comic PAINKILLER JANE has been optioned for feature film adaptation by Stephen L’Heureux’s Solipsist Films (one of the producers of SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR).

The comic is about a former police officer granted functional immortality by – depending on which origin you read – a cocktail of bad drugs or “some weird voodoo” resurrection by a mysterious superhuman, which sees her utilising her newfound physical resilience to become a violent vigilante. Although Jane is effectively unkillable, the kicker to her ability is that while she swiftly heals from any injury sustained, she is still susceptible to the pain that comes with them, often relying on industrial quantities of aspirin to remain functioning, hence her adopted name.

The series has been adapted twice before, both times by Syfy. The first was an action film starring Emmanuelle Vaugnier (SAW II; LOST GIRL) which was of somewhat lacklustre quality and for some reason focused more on Jane’s enhanced mental capabilities than durability. Then came a full-length TV series starring Kristanna Loken (TERMINATOR 3; MORTAL KOMBAT – CONQUEST) featuring a government team tasked with hunting criminals in possession of dangerous psychic abilities. It started off strong before wavering in quality (one of its better episodes was written by the comic’s creator Jimmy Palmiotti) and then drastically improving towards the end, but not soon enough to avoid cancellation after a single season.

Hopefully this new adaptation will give the indestructible redhead the live-action outing she deserves.
