After Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM didn’t reach its projected heights last year, the chances of a sequel seemed to be somewhere between slim and zero. Speaking to Collider, Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull has revealed that the film didn’t do quite as badly as so many believed, and that a sequel is something that is still of interest.

Tull said, “We love being in business with Guillermo, and frankly that movie did more business than the first X-MEN, did more than BATMAN BEGINS, did more than SUPERMAN RETURNS, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, STAR TREK. So, for a movie that was an original property, it’s done really well. It did north of $400 million globally, and both the home video sales and the merchandise have performed well, so it seems like fans really loved the world. So we’re going to sit down with Guillermo, and as long as we think it’s authentic and there’s something to say, we’re certainly open to it.”

Given that all of those movies, bar SUPERMAN RETURNS, were given sequels, Tull certainly has a point. Still, the budget for PACIFIC RIM was around $190 million, which is a fair amount more than any of those other films listed apart from Singer’s Superman flick. Either way, it certainly appears that a PACIFIC RIM sequel could very well happen in the future.
