Remember the recent news that Guillermo del Toro was already working on a script for PACIFIC RIM 2? Well now comes word of a release date for the sequel, plus an animated series and some further prequel graphic novels.
The writer/director released a video to confirm the news:
Additionally, speaking to BuzzFeed, del Toro also revealed, “The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb, and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”
Despite costing $190 million and doing poorly in the US, PACIFIC RIM did strong numbers internationally and on home release, taking its worldwide figures to $411 million. Whilst a sequel was a possibility, this is the first we’ve heard of an animated series. As for the graphic novels, they will be a continuation of the PACIFIC RIM: TALES FROM YEAR ZERO work.
To be released by Legendary Pictures and Universal Studios, PACIFIC RIM 2 has been set for a 7th April, 2017 release.
