Hooray!! British fans will be able to get their filthy paws on the DVD/Blu-ray release of the year’s best action film – AVENGERS ASSEMBLE –  a full eight days before our American cousins. Joy! But it comes at a price… a pretty terrible price, in fact. It’s now confirmed that writer/director Joss Whedon’s commentary track won’t be featured on the UK release, the excuse given being that the track wasn’t ready in time for the production of the UK discs. Now a lot of disc purchasers are a bit ambivalent about commentary tracks and it’s true that some of them can be a bit like listening to paint dry – but seriously, Joss Whedon? The man always – always – gives good commentary value; check out any of his tracks on discs of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly/Serenity. Witty and informative just don’t cover it; only essential comes close. Now this is either a cynical ploy to persuade fans to double-dip when some ‘ultimate edition’ is released later (in time for Christmas, maybe?) or just a genuine unfortunate mistake. Either way, a lot of people are going to extremely unhappy… and we suspect a lot of people will be opting to import come September…

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE hits home video on September 17th.
