John Carpenter may not have always gotten it right, but when he did, few directors came close to matching his tense, invasive and innovative filmmaking style. THE THING remains a body-horror classic, and HALLOWEEN practically spawned an entire sub-genre, so it’s sad when a director of his stature gets turned down.

Blumhouse Productions is a breath of fresh air in an industry dogged by control freaks and money grubbers, offering creative freedom in exchange for low budgets. Some of the greatest contributions, financially speaking, to the horror genre were made for peanuts; THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, in particular, were impressive cash cows that spewed forth pale imitations, though neither has been bested by sequels or copycats.

Speaking to Fangoria, Carpenter revealed ‘There’s two writers that I’m friends with and we pitched a project to Blumhouse, and they turned us down. So I guess I won’t be working with them.’ Blumhouse are behind popular horror titles such as the aforementioned PARANORMAL ACTIVITY and INSIDIOUS, Carpenter would have been right at home. It looks like he may have to take the fan-funded route.
