Back in July last year this intriguing project was being circled by BACK TO THE FUTURE director Robert Zemeckis. Having dropped out along the line, no doubt to develop yet another unwanted mo’ cap extravaganza, Legendary Pictures are now in talks with Jaume Collet-Serra (he of the underrated OPHAN) to take over. Actor Bradley Cooper is also the first to throw his hat in the ring as star.

As regular readers will know, the film spins the tale of real life Revolutionary War naval hero Paul Jones who, after being discharged from the military, accepts a job offer from a shipping magnate to go and investigate fishy goings on regarding his missing ships. What’s happening to the vessels? Simple… HERE THERE BE MONSTERS!

JAWS aside, the sea monster sub-genre is rarely explored (we’re ignoring the MEGA SHARKS of the world for obvious reasons) so this has some huge potential we think.

This also marks the FOURTH ‘giant monster’ movie heading our way courtesy of Legendary Pictures, with next year seeing the release of Guillermo Del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM, a GODZILLA reboot on the way and the recently announced dragon-centric SLAYER. Good times!

As always, we’ll have more as it develops…

Props go to Vulture for breaking this.
