We’re still somewhat sceptical about the mass appeal of a Matt Damon-less Bourne movie (or Jeremy Renner in general), but we have to admit that from what little we’ve seen of BOURNE LEGACY, it does actual look pretty impressive. Could the fourth entry into the super-spy series be something more than a shameless studio cash-grab after all? Check out the newly released International promo and see what you think (although if you saw the first teaser there’s admittedly not much new here sadly)…

Providing some much needed credibility is the fact that THE BOURNE LEGACY is directed by Tony Gilroy, the writer behind all three of the previous films. Though we’re not convinced Jason Bourne himself would agree with that statement, after Matt Damon publicly blasted Gilroy’s BOURNE ULTIMATUM screenplay last December, calling it “embarrassing”, and a “career-ender”. Yikes. That said, Damon wishes the new movie no ill will, telling GQ last year that he’s “really pulling for this one, even though I don’t have anything to do with it. Selfishly, it’s bad for me if that movie doesn’t do well.” Damon also maintains that he might want to return to the character sometime down the line, hence Universal’s decision not to simply adapt the Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne novel of the same name, instead choosing to create a new character in Renner’s David Webb. Could we see the two go toe-to-toe in a future movie? If Gilroy and Renner don’t deliver on this, then it’s highly unlikely.

THE BOURNE LEGACY opens August 17th.
