Thanks to the massive success of THE HUNGER GAMES this past weekend, which made like a billion hundred dollars or something, you can expect a lot more of this. A production outfit known as Black Forest has bought the rights to upcoming novel QUARANTINE: THE LONERS. Surprise surprise this is a ‘high school survival story’ set in a world where a disease has wiped out all the adults.

In this world gone mad we focus on two brothers who are sheltered in a high school after all adults are gone. In the school are a thousand other kids who all form factions and gangs LORD OF THE FLIES style and fight each other to survive. The bond between these two brothers is tested when a girl comes between them. The book was written by Lex Habre and Thomas Voorhies under the pseudonym Lex Thomas and the two of them will also write the script.

Like most things, this is the first in a planned trilogy. Do studios even remember the fate of all those things greenlit after the initial success of HARRY POTTER? I do: THE GOLDEN COMPASS, LEMONY SNICKET, THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, ERAGON need I go on? It seems that something that appeals to teens because of one or two characters hits big and then everything around tries the same and forgets that you have to have a character audiences can latch on to. Would THE HUNGER GAMES be so huge if it didn’t have a positive female role model? It’s unlikely.
