It’s been mooted/threatened for a while now, but it seems that the Michael Bay remake of THE BIRDS is finally going ahead. Variety has announced that the film, to be produced by Bay’s Platinum Dunes is to go ahead with Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen.

Remaking horror classics is becoming something of a bad habit for Bay, who’s overseen (with varying results) the new versions of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, FRIDAY THE 13TH, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE HITCHER. And that’s before we mention directing the (what’s a nice way of putting this?) somewhat divisive TRANSFORMERS movies.

The original 1963 film, whilst not held quite in the same esteem as Hitchcock’s masterpieces like REAR WINDOW and VERTIGO, is nonetheless rightly regarded as a classic, and given Bay’s reputation, the remake is likely to prove even more divisive than Gus Van Sant’s take on PSYCHO.

No plot details have yet been released, but it’s rumoured that the remake will stick closer to Daphne du Maurier’s original story that Hitchcock’s somewhat loose adaptation.

That strange whirring sound you can hear is Hitchcock spinning in his grave.
