Following on from last week’s news of the casting of Mark Whalberg in a key role, returning director Michael Bay has dropped some fresh details on what we can expect from TRANSFORMERS 4.

While talking with TMZ, the filmmaker offered the following plot information…

“We’re doing a lot of things that are going to really make it feel fresh and new,” said Bay. “The movie will continue four years from the attack on Chicago; which is in the last movie. So it’s going to still have the same lineage. And it’s going a full new direction and feels very natural how it’s going in that direction.”

Okay, so not exactly revelatory, but at least we now know for sure that it isn’t completely ignoring the canon set up in the first three. Speaking of which, the same interview also suggests that the character of Sam Witwicky may also return, despite widespread reports that Shia LaBeouf had had enough of big budget franchise fare.

“He will be back,” assured Bay. “What he’s saying is he wants to be taken seriously. And sometimes when you’re in a blockbuster, people don’t take you seriously.” (Hence LaBeouf will next be seen in ‘the buff’ when he gets his bits out for Lars von Trier’s NYMPHOMANIAC.) Whether that means we can expect Witwicky’s return in 4 or later down the line remains unclear. But we’ll wager the latter.

TRANSFORMERS 4 will open in the UK on June 27th 2014.
