No matter what you thought of the first movie, it seems a second MACHETE movie is on the way and possibly a third. MACHETE KILLS has now begun casting after securing financing and none other than everyone’s favourite lunatic Mel Gibson has been cast as the villain.

Gibson’s career has taken something of a downturn in recent years due to some revelations about his personal life and a refusal to hire him from some quarters. THE BEAVER tanked last year and HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION (aka GET THE GRINGO) is going direct to VOD in the states despite apparently being quite good. Personal problems aside, Gibson is a unique screen presence and if he really gets to cut loose in this film we could be in for a treat.

Robert Rodriguez is apparently drumming up further interest by attaching Oscar nominee Michelle Williams to the film. Which puzzles me because honestly the first movie wasn’t that great despite having Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal and Jeff Fahey in the cast. Is the script for the sequel really that special?

It’s not entirely clear just who is directing this yet either, but the fact that this getting such high profile interest makes me think that Rodriguez himself must be going it alone in the director’s chair. The film is due to begin filming this summer for a 2013 release.
