Marvel Movie News

There’s been quite a few films from Marvel Studios over the last few years, with plenty more planned for the next few years. One thing that all films have in common, they all tend to have penis-wielding heroes in the lead roles. Iron Man? Male. Captain America? Male. Thor? Male? Hulk? Male. Whilst Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow was a key part of AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, she still had to share screen-time with the rest of the Avengers team. Director/producer Louis D’Esposito has been speaking to ComingSoon.net about possibly developing some Marvel properties with female leads.

D’Esposito said, “There’s obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female lead superhero. We have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Pegg Carter and you never know. Maybe there’s an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?”

In terms of a time-frame for a female-led film, D’Esposito added, “It’s hard, because we have a small group at Marvel. We do two films a year. To get those two films done and to do them right takes a lot of work and manpower. And female-power, obviously. To add a third film and to just put it in the slate right now is difficult. We have these next three, four, five films coming out and that’s what we’re really concentrating on.”

So whilst we may not see any female-led films in the near-future, it appears that there’s at least been discussions. In terms of characters that Marvel/Disney can draw from, Ms. Marvel, now known as Captain Marvel, is likely the best bet, and she’s also been rumoured to be getting her own film for the last few years. One strong female character that we will likely see in the next few years is The Wasp, who will likely be a part of Edgar Wright’s ANT-MAN.

Here’s hoping we get some more Marvel ladies at some point.
