With Marc Webb’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 set to be released shortly, many fans have voiced their concerns about the amount of villains that may feature in some capacity. Jamie Foxx’s Electro is the villain that’s being positioned as the sequel’s ‘big bad,’ but there’s also Paul Giamatti as Aleksei Sytsevich, aka Rhino, and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, aka the Green Goblin. As well as these three confirmed, the trailer has teased the likes of Doctor Octopus and the Vulture, whilst the promotional work for the film has featured references to a plethora of familiar characters, such as Venom, the Hobgoblin, Kraven the Hunter, the Big Man, the Enforcers and even the Robot Master. Speaking at a recent SXSW event, the director has been addressing fans’ concerns over too many cooks spoiling the broth.

Webb said, “We’re obviously familiar with the complaints people had. We’re very careful to make sure the stories intertwine. For Peter Parker, it’s very important that you create obstacles that are difficult to overcome. I’m going to embrace the spectacle. I’m not going to be beholden to smallness. I want it to be fantastic, to be big, to command and express that feeling when you’re a kid and reading the comics.”

The director also confirmed that Giamatti’s Sytsevich/Rhino will only have four minutes of screentime in this movie, although Giamatti himself has confirmed that he will return for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3.

The official line for the film reads:

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, Peter Parker finds that a great conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.”

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is released globally on 2nd May, but us UK folks get the film on 18th April.
