Given how Marc Webb is playing such a pivotal role in the Spider-Man world that Sony Pictures is currently developing, not to mention having recently been announced to direct THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 after having helmed the first two instalments, it comes as a little bit of a shock to hear that the director won’t be directing the already-confirmed THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4.

Speaking to The Daily Beast, Webb revealed, “I’d like to be involved as a consultant and I’ve already talked to the guys about it, but in terms of directing it, that will be close out my tenure. I’ve so much fun doing it, but after the third movie it’ll be the time to find something else.”

As well as the fourth Spider-Man-centric films, Sony also has two spin-offs in the works, THE SINISTER SIX and VENOM. Discussing the greater Spider-verse that the studio is developing, Webb added, “We’re building out a more complicated Spider-Man universe with characters you haven’t seen in other Spider-Man movies – The Sinister Six, Venom, and more. We’d all love to overlap with other studios, but it’s beyond my pay grade.”

Whilst the possibility of Spider-Man popping up in an Avengers movie seems impossible at this point, several cast members of various Sony, 20th Century Fox, and Marvel/Disney productions have talked about how they’d love for it to happen. We can only hope that the studios put financial gain to one side and combine their efforts to give fans something truly memorable.

In the meantime, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is set for an 18th April UK release. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 has been confirmed for 10th June, 2016, with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4 set to follow on 4th May, 2018.
