Well we asked him about the possibility earlier this year, and now comes word that Leigh Whannell will indeed direct INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3. The news comes directly from director of the first two INSIDIOUS movies, James Wan, who will act as a producer this time out.

Taking to Twitter, Wan said, “I’m truly honoured & excited to b passing the torch onto my great bud @LWhannell, who’ll make his directorial debut w #INSIDIOUS 3 @blumhouse

Whannell has written both previous INSIDIOUS movies, not to mention appeared in both. It looks like he’ll be juggling writing, acting and directing for this third installment in the hugely profitable horror series.

When we asked Whannell about possibly directing the third INSIDIOUS earlier in the year, he replied, “I’ve thought a lot about that actually. I haven’t even made up my mind. What I want to do is write a third film and then, sort of, almost take off my writing hat and give myself amnesia somehow; read the script as though someone else has presented it to me as somebody else’s script and see if I really like it. If I really like, I think there’s a chance that I could direct it. It really depends on how the script turns out for me and whether I’d be the guy for the job. But even somebody else directing it, if it wasn’t me, I’d want to be closely involved just to make sure that they really got the world of INSIDIOUS right.”

The first INSIDIOUS grossed $97 million from a $1.5 million budget, making it the most profitable movie of 2011. Last year‘s INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 took an impressive $162 million from a $5 million budget.

INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 is already pencilled in for a 3rd April, 2015 release.
