Those of you happy to see retro sci-fi MANBORG squeeze into our 2013 Top 40 might be especially interested in this one. KUNG FURY is an action/comedy/crime/sci-fi movie equally inspired by ‘80s VHS trash and mines the same vein of bombastic insanity.

The brainchild of Swedish actor/director/writer/VFX artist David Sandberg (who incidentally bears an uncanny and distracting resemblance to a young Johnny Depp), it tells the story of the eponymous renegade cop whose partner was killed by “the most dangerous kung fu master criminal of all time”: Adolf Hitler (also known as Kung Führer). Travelling back in time to avenge his friend’s death, along the way he encounters an Uzi-toting Viking babe in a studded leather bikini, dinosaurs, a robotic arcade machine and the Norse god Thor. It’s a safe bet the finished film will be just as mental as it sounds.

Initially shooting enough footage to edit into a 30-minute short, a Kickstarter campaign was set up to fund the visual effects to go with it. Initially aiming for $200,000, word of the project spread like memetic wildfire across social media sites (being featured on the front page of The Pirate Bay probably didn’t hurt either), with the target being met in less than two days. The updated target now stands at $1,000,000 to allow for script rewrites, attentional shooting and effects work, all with the intent of expanding the short into a full-length feature.

There are many things that can be said about the film itself, but to be honest, all you need to know can be gleaned from the trailer below. You may think it’s one of the funniest things you’ve ever seen; you may think it’s one of the stupidest things you’ve ever seen. Most likely, you’ll think both.
