After dipping his toes into the water of horror with 2011’s RED STATE, Kevin Smith seems to have a thirst to quench. Currently finishing off the walrus-themed horror TUSK, Smith is to follow that picture with Christmas terror, ANTI-CLAUS. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the writer/director has been discussing his festive frightener.

“When I was a kid, if they wanted to make a Christmas horror movie, they’d stick an axe in Santa’s hands,” Smith said. “In ANTI-CLAUS, we leave Santa alone and creep with the Krampus through twisted tales of holly-jolly murder, desire, desperation and despair. Just in time for the holiday season.”

He added, “In America, we’re taught that nice kids get presents from Santa and naughty kids get coal. But in countries like Germany, Austria, Bavaria, Romania and Hungary, Christmas is more metal than merry. Saint Nicholas brings a sack full of toys for good kids and the Krampus carries an empty bag for taking away the bad kids. I wanna see THAT Christmas movie. So rather than wait for it, we’ll make it instead.”

The Krampus that Smith refers to is a creature that is said by some cultures to actually eat naughty kids at Christmas time. So, if you happen to have a child that is giving you particular grief around the festive period, be sure to drop in a mention of the Krampus.

In terms of ANTI-CLAUS, at present Smith has Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez and Michael Parks on board. All four of those names are also present in Smith’s TUSK, which will be released later this year.
