Whilst promoting horror series PENNY DREADFUL, Josh Hartnett revealed that he apparently decided against playing Spider-Man, Batman and Superman over the years. Quite the big-bucks roles to walk away from.

When asked by Details.com on turning down SUPERMAN RETURNS’ lead, Hartnett said, “Spider-Man was something we talked about. Batman was another one. But I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn’t want that. I didn’t want to be labelled as Superman for the rest of my career. I was maybe 22, but I saw the danger.”

On where he stands now on possibly playing a superhero at some point, he added, “I’d say, ‘Let’s talk about how it would be done, see if we can get on the same page.’ Compromise doesn’t scare me anymore.”

At this point, one would have to think that Hartnett’s superhero calling has passed, although who knows. Whether he’d have made a good Spider-Man, Batman or Superman, it looks like we’ll never know. Personally, we always thought he had a bit of the Remy LeBeau about him.
