With a SANDMAN film having been rumoured for years, Deadline has confirmed that a movie adaption of Neil Gaiman’s iconic work might be finally happening. Not only that, the film has a star and director attached. Pulling double duty, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play the lead as well as taking the directorial reigns. David Goyer is currently developing a screenplay.

Initially said to be in advanced talks for the gig, Gordon-Levitt has taken to Twitter to confirm things. He said, “Ladies and gentleman, I’m incredibly honored to be working with David Goyer, Warner Bros, and @neilhimself on SANDMAN. #Prelude”

Launched in 1989 under DC’s Vertigo imprint, SANDMAN initially ran for 75 issues until 1996. The focal point of the story was Dream, one of the Endless, and his brothers and sisters; Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny.  A strange, twisted tale of worlds within worlds, SANDMAN is generally seen as one of the greatest comic books of all time. It even holds the honour of being one of the few graphic novels to make it onto the New York Times Best Seller list.

The fact that JGL used #Prelude would suggest that film may be based on SANDMAN’s first collection of tales, titled PRELUDE AND NOCTURNES. This sees Dream imprisoned on earth, escaping and looking to regain power.

As for Gordon-Levitt, he popped his directorial cherry earlier this year with DON JON.

Expect more on this as it develops.
