We have known for a while that Christopher Nolan’s frequent collaborator, cinematographer Wally Pfister, would be making his directorial debut with something called Transcendence and that it would be a science fiction film. Nolan and Emma Thomas are to produce through Warner Bros from a script by Jack Paglen. Now Pfister and Nolan have nabbed none other than Johnny Depp for the lead in a tale which is described as being in the vein of 2001 and Inception and is said to revolve around a man who creates a malevolent, self-aware super-computer into which he gets absorbed. Tobey Maguire, James McAvoy and Noomi Rapace are apparently all being courted for roles as well.

This project intrigues us; on the one hand Nolan doesn’t attach himself to just anything but there again maybe he is just helping out an old comrade. On the other hand Depp has made a series of bad choices lately, most stemming from his inability to say no to Tim Burton so it’s good that he is doing an original property again. More news as we get it…
