According to recent rumours, Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Jon M. Chu (GI Joe: Retaliation) were possibilities to boldly go where a few have gone before. In other words, they were possible choices to direct the next Star Trek film after this years critically well-received (but controversial among fans) Star Trek: Into Darkness. Well now the crew for the next Enterprise outing has been narrowed down, as earlier today Deadline confirmed that Paramount “is sweet on Joe Cornish to direct the next film.”

Cornish has been involved in some mighty big projects of late, including Spielberg/Jackson’s animated Tintin adaptations (he co-wrote Spielberg’s incredibly fun 2011 film The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn). As well as co-writing the script (with Edgar Wright) for Marvel’s Ant-Man. However this piece of news is yet to be confirmed as an announcement and as we know “I want” doesn’t always get. Yet it would be appealing to see the studio get their way and to see where Cornish would take Star Trek next.

Paramount aims to shoot Summer 2014 and have the movie set to stun in 2016. It is all but guaranteed that J.J. Abrams will produce, while screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are back on writing duties. After attacking the block, could Cornish next be attacking a blockade?
