According to Variety, Joaquin Phoenix is in heavy talks with Warner Brothers to play a significant role in Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL sequel. The current word is that Phoenix is discussing the role of the film’s main villain, which is expected to be long-time Superman foe, Lex Luthor. No more is known on the matter at this point.

Phoenix is best known for his turns in movies such as GLADIATOR, BUFFALO SOLDIERS, THE VILLAGE and WALK THE LINE. In recent years, he took a break from acting, only to return last year in THE MASTER. He’s next up in Spike Jonze’s HER, which hits selected screens next week.

Currently, Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL sequel has Henry Cavill returning as Superman, Ben Affleck playing Batman, Gal Gadot on board as Wonder Woman, and Amy Adams getting a return as Lois Lane. Plot details are vague at present, but it’s expected that the Caped Crusader will initially be out to take down the alien menace of Superman. One or two scraps later, the pair will become the ‘World’s Finest’ in order to take down a greater threat. Current rumours suggest that said greater threat is rumoured to involve Lex Luthor and/or Doomsday.

Expect more on this as it develops.

As it stand, Snyder’s sequel is scheduled for a 17th July, 2015 release.
